Intravenous Contrast Pre-medication
ProtocolYour
doctor has requested that you obtain an intravenous contrast study
to further evaluate your medical problem. The contrast contains an
iodine compound to which you have previously exhibited an allergy.
To provide the safest possible environment for your test, you are
being pre-medicated to suppress your apparent allergy. It is still
possible to have an allergic reaction even with this
pre-medication; however, the risk is extremely low.
The prescription must be
obtained from your referring physician. In addition to any other
instructions you have received to prepare for this examination,
you are to take the following medication at the prescribed times:
1. Take a 50 mg tablet of
Prednisone and a 50 mg tablet of Benadryl at 5p.m. and 11 p.m.
the night before your scheduled examination.
2. Take a 50 mg tablet of
Prednisone and a 50 mg tablet of Benadryl along with your single
dose (300 mg) of Tagamet two (2) hours prior to your scheduled
appointment.
3. Remember not to take any
solid foods after midnight prior to your scheduled appointment
and take only enough liquids to take your oral doses of
medication on the day of your study.
If you have any questions
regarding this pre-medication procedure or your study, do not
hesitate to call the Radiology Department at the Lexington Clinic
at 859-258-4181.
